One Word for 2016

action

Happy New Year’s Eve!!!!  New Year’s Eve has always been one of my absolute favorite days of the year.  I love looking back at the past year to marvel in all that happened, and at the same time looking forward with such excitement about what’s to come.  I also love dressing up and doing something on New Year’s Eve.  Confession: I bought fake eyelashes yesterday and I’m pretty pumped to rock them at dinner tonight!!  HA!!  I digress.  So, can I tell you what I don’t like about a new year…setting a resolution.  I’ve done it.  I suck at it.  I always fail.  And it’s really annoying.  Then I have those friends, like my friend Alana.  She went an entire year without shopping.  She did not buy one single thing for herself.  Like nothing.  Like no new clothes, no new shoes, not even a new necklace or pair of earrings.  Now, some of you may think I’m shallow because I was so shocked by this…that’s okay, maybe I am.  It wasn’t so much the shopping, it was that Alana, who is a total fashionista and doesn’t have a closet, but a whole room she calls her “styling room”, had the discipline to go an entire year and give up something that she absolutely loves.  I love her will.  I love her discipline.  I am not like her.  At all.  I can’t do it.  So what does this have to do with anything, much less the title of this post…I know SEO and all that stuff.  I don’t set resolutions, but for 2016 I do have one word.

A few days ago, I asked my twitter followers (I still hate that word) if they had any recommendations for leadership books and/or faith based books.  @In_The_Margin suggested the book “One Word”.  I had heard of the idea to pick one word for your annual theme, but really had no clue how to go about it.  I asked her a few questions about why she liked the book, and she said it was because that one word informed everything she did in 2015.  I LOVED that!!!  Then she used the following words, “One word changed my life.  I stopped the autopilot and claimed my power and the natural result was peaceful freedom.”  I was sold!!  So sold that I went that day to Barnes and Noble to pick up the book, One Word That Will Change Your LifeHere’s what I love about this book:

  • It’s quick and fairly easy
  • It guides you through a series of three reflection questions
  • It forces you to look inward before you focus on the outward
  • It’s easy…did I mention that?!?!

So here’s what’s exciting for you…you don’t necessarily have to buy the book!!  You can go to Get One Word and download the One Word Guide Plan which will help YOU do the same thing that the book did for me!  Only catch is you sign up for their emails, which happen to be awesome, so no biggie.

What’s my word?  Glad you asked!  My word is ACTION.  I have a lot of dreams and goals.  I have been praying for God to open awesome doors, to allow me to do big, huge things in my life.  But as Mark Batterson (you remember him, author of The Circle Maker), always says, “We must pray like it depends on God and work like it depends on us!”  So I can dream big and pray big, bold prayers but if I don’t work for it, it ain’t going to happen.

Let me tell you about one more step that isn’t in the book or plan.  After I determined my word, which was absolutely driven by prayer, I took that word and did a search on my bible.com app to see where in the bible that word was appearing.  And the Lord used that opportunity to give me this verse, “Commit your action(s) to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.”¹ BOOM!!!  He dropped the mic.

Proverbs 16, 3

My commitment to God, myself, and you, my readers, is that I am going to pray like it depends on God, and work through my action like it depends on me.  What would I like YOU to do…take an hour, download the guide and find your word.  Then take your bible.com app and find a verse with that word in it, that can be a guide in your life for 2016.    This is just one more example of how you can live into your life during 2016.

Once you get your word, will you please share it in the comments?  I would love to hear it!!  Is there someone else that you think should choose their one word, share this blog post with them!  I am excited to see how your one word can impact your life in 2016.

XOXO –

Caytie

PS – Don’t forget, I am praying for you and your deepest, hardest prayers every single day!!  I am grateful for you!!
